BUTTER KNIFE
The plated blade of knives from a box of small finds was flaking at the edges due to corrosion of the iron beneath the plating. Iron oxides and iron chlorides were present on the surface. The iron chlorides were dissolved in distilled water, and the remaining corrosion was removed mechanically.
The handle of this butter knife is mother of pearl. Corrosion of the tang caused the handle to crack. Corrosion was cleaned off of the tang and the mother of pearl chip mechanically. Acryloid B-72 was used to readhere the chip.
