Beginning work on ceramics and glass from Beauvoir involved a week-long process of sorting through small finds boxes and pulling out glass and ceramic fragments and then, sorting fragments into pieces from single objects…..

“STONEWALL” JACKSON CHINA FROM BEAUVOIR
To date, the dining set used by Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson before the Civil War is the most completely recovered of the high priority items found among the fragments. The earthenware set with cobalt glaze design is typical of transfer ware of the 19th century and depicts an Asian pagoda within a landscape scene.  A mark on back of each piece depicts a pagoda with trees and is labeled “PEKING.”  Before Katrina, a soup bowl, plate and the tureen were to be featured in Beauvoir: a Walk-Through History (left). The recovered fragments of one of the soup bowls shows the extent of the damage to the set (right).
Finding Fragments: Fragments for each plate were sorted from among thousands of fragments collected from the site and temporarily held in place with blue painter’s tape. The recovered items include: 3 dinner plates, 6 soup bowls and the soup tureen with lid. As with many of the ceramic objects, for stabilization they required the  removal of soluble salts and organic and iron staining before they underwent structural repair.
Piecing Together: Once all the fragments had been cleaned and placed, the fragments were adhered with B-72.
Making Fills: Large areas of loss were filled with plaster using dental wax (pink) molds.  Molds were made by taking impressions from intact areas of the object which allows for an accurate reproduction of the shape of the original piece.  The wax impression was then placed over the loss, adhered with tape and filled with plaster.  Smaller losses and cracks were filled with Modostuc.  Finally, the fills were smoothed and sanded with fine sandpaper and micromesh.
