CURRENCY
Ten pieces of Confederate currency were recovered from the Beauvoir site after hurricane Katrina.  Although the bills had been housed in Mylar, damage including tears and staining had occurred.
The mud covered Mylar envelopes were discarded.  Treatments on the currency have included surface cleaning (see above), mends, fills, washing, lining, and pressure sensitive tape removal.  Each bill will be rehoused individually in a Mylar sleeve and folder.

PAPER LINED COMPARTMENT

This paper-lined compartment is from a card table that once belonged to Jefferson Davis.  The paper itself is marbled and currently is torn, cockled, and partially detached from the inside of the compartment.  Treatment will involve removing, repairing, and reinserting the paper lining.  Kathryn Campbell is currently treating the table’s base and top.

WORKSHOPS AND SITE VISITS

Lois Price, Karen Pavelka, Jo-Fan Huang, and Annie Wilker presented three workshops on the “Recovery of Water-Damaged Books, Archives and Works of Art on Paper.”  The workshops were held in Gulfport, Oxford, and Cleveland, MS.

Lois Price, Karen Pavelka, Jo-Fan Huang, and Annie Wilker performed site visits to selected Mississippi libraries and archives including the Sunflower County Library and the Columbus – Lowndes Public Library.  Each institution then received a written summary of preservation recommendations.
