TREATMENT OBJECTIVE
To permit access to the collection.
DESCRIPTION
Dimensions are 9 7/8" x 15 5/8" (24.9 cm x 39.7 cm).
The manuscript legal document is written in iron gall ink on a folio of mouldmade paper, which has then been folded into quarters.
Media
Iron gall ink: The manuscript is written in slightly smudged black iron gall ink. The heavy, dark writing covers most of the first page, leaving a 2 cm margin on the left. Spacing between lines of writing is roughly 1 cm. The writing extends about ¼ of the way onto the second page. The third page is blank, and the fourth contains a filing annotation.
Primary Support
The primary support is an off-white, medium weight, machine made wove paper. All four edges are trimmed. The surface is slightly textured. The paper contains a watermark and a countermark.
CONDITION
The document is in fairly good condition overall.
Media
Iron gall ink: The iron gall ink is in good condition. It is dark brown and very legible. Some sinking into the page is visible, and there is deterioration on the paper where it was in contact with the ink through folding.
Primary Support
Primary support has darkened to a deep cream color. There is heavy surface dirt and associated staining, particularly on the portion of the document that was on the outside when it was folded. There is some abrasion and staining throughout.
The edges of the paper are somewhat worn, and some areas along the edges and corners are folded in and abraded. The paper has been folded into quarters, and the corner was then folded over, causing diagonal creases. A severe tear extends almost the entire length of the center fold. Small losses and areas of thinning (probably insect damage) occur throughout the document. These areas are somewhat brittle. None of the losses or major tears are in areas containing text.
PHOTODOCUMENTATION
Digital images before treatment, front and back. Overview for ambient, raking, and transmitted light.
TESTING
All media and dark spots were tested for particulate matter by contact with a dry cotton swab.
Iron gall ink: No particulate offset.
Total Testing time: 5 min.
TREATMENT PROPOSAL

2) Mend as needed.
3) Rehouse in original folder.

TREATMENT NOTES

2) Mended center tear with untoned lens tissue. (2 hours)
3) Rehouse in original folder.
Total Treatment Time: 2.5 hours
