VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY as an Archives and Preservation Advisor

Duties ~ Requirements ~ Qualifications ~ More Information

The Society of American Archivists - UT Student Chapter along with the Austin History Center is sponsoring an Archives Clinic Saturday, October 14 at the Austin History Center. The free event is open to the public from 10 am to 4 pm at 810 Guadalupe Street. Everyone is welcome to drop in during the day with their own family's photos, slides, scrapbooks, documents, super 8 films, and videos. Students and faculty from the University of Texas Graduate School of Library and Information Science along with staff archivists from the Austin History Center will be available to share organizing, storage, and archival preservation advice.

Duties:

As an archives and preservation advisor, you will work with the public and advise them on how to better store, organize, and preserve their personal photographic, paper, and magnetic media material including b&w and color photographs and slides; personal papers and scrapbooks; and audio and video recordings as well as super 8 films. This is a wonderful opportunity for a student of Archival Enterprise or Preservation and Conservation.

The student will be asked to dedicate 2 hours (or more) on Saturday, October 14 between the hours of 10 am and 4 pm. The work shifts available are from 10-12, 12-2, and 2-4. The work shift will be chosen by the volunteer and arranged via e-mail with Maribeth (mahumari@yahoo.com) or by signing up when the sign-up sheet is presented during your archives or preservation class time.

Requirements:

An eagerness to learn about and share archival and preservation tips and advice with the public and fellow students, staff, and professionals. Experience or no experience - this is a wonderful opportunity to learn from one another and gain knowledge and experience in applying archival and preservation practices. Everyone has something to offer and gain from this Archives Week event.

Suggested Readings and Qualifications:

From the SAA UT Student Chapter website you can access links to numerous sites on the preservation, storage, and organization of photographs, color slides, super 8 film, audio and video recordings, scrapbooks, and paper. To better prepare yourself for the Archives Clinic, looking over a site or two from each area would be very helpful.

There are a few books available at the various libraries on UT's campus that would also provide an introduction, further explanation and insight into the issues of archival storage, organization, and preservation.
