Bridging
the Digital Divide
The Nebraska Public Access Database is a collaborative effort among the
Community Council fo the Nebraska Information Technology Commission (NITC),
the Nebraska Library Commission, and Nebraska Online. The database provides
ifnormation on all sites in or sponsored by public entities, which provide
public access to computers with Internet access. The databases is searchable
by location at the NITC Web site and the ifnormation is updated by the
Nebraska Library Commission.
Library Services and Technology Act
The Nebraska Library Commission is responsible for administering the
federally funded Library Services Technology Act (LSTA) in Nebraska.
LSTA funds have been instrumental in introducing and expanding information
technology and Internet access in Nebraska Public Libraries. The Nebraska
Library Commission Library Services and Technology Act Five-Year Plan,
1997-1992 identifies five long-range goals. Over the five-year period
from 1998-2002, a total of 172 grants were awarded and $1, 313, 303 was
distributed to local communities. Of these 172 grants, 93 were Internet
access projects and 14 involved library services to special groups.
