Computer Network Training Academy Wichita Public Library This program was made possible by the Fred C. & Mary R. Koch Foundation and was developed in conjunction with Gates Library Initiative granted to the Wichita Public Library. The academy will utilize the new computer lab created through the Gates grant to train students from impoverished backgrounds to become certified computer network technicians. It will take four semesters to complete the courses outlined in this academy. Upon completion, these individuals will be trained in a marketable skill and will be able to make better lives for themselves. Kansas City Public Library - Cultural Mosaic The Kansas City Public Library is making an effort to span the digital divide by providing their patrons with a web-site called "Cultural Mosaic: Celebrating Human Diversity." The web-site provides links to web-sites and other resources geared to populations that are otherwise under-served. The links fall under the following categories:
Wichita Public Library - Gates Library Initiative Wichita Public Library, in Wichita, Kansas, received two grants totaling $98,000.00. Through the Gates Library Initiative (funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation), awarded to communities with at least a 10% poverty level, a computer training lab was established and 24 Pentium III computers were dispersed throughout several library branches in the city. The computer training lab is located at the central library, where training is conducted for librarians and patrons. The computers were up and running on June 30, 2000.
