1976
- Loans were available through the Farmers Home Administration. These
loans were "to develop community facilities [including public libraries]
for public use in rural areas and towns of up to 10,000 people"
(American Libraries, Jan. 1976, p. 14).
- The "Florence Agreement on the Importation of Educational, Scientific,
and Cultural Materials" was being reviewed by a committee. This
agreement originated in the 1950s and was intended to make it easier
for international facilities to cooperate with each other in sharing
information (Frase) (American Libraries, Jan. 1976, p. 19).
- An advertisement in the February 1976 issue of American Libraries
stated "The Science Press automated library catalog at Mount Sinai
Medical Center of Miami Beach, Florida, is the first computerized medical
book catalog published in the United States" (p. 86).
- The "Project: Knowledge 2000" conference was held in Virginia
to discuss future knowledge needs, creation and access (McKinven) (American
Libraries, April 1976, p. 199 - 203).
- In July 1976, "the Library of Congress began¡¦.Braille
edition[s] of the NY Times Large Type Weekly" (American Libraries,
October 1976, p. 583).
1977
- In June 1977, a law "prohibiting discrimination against the
handicapped" was passed. Libraries were one institute having to
comply, which meant they would have to become handicap accessible for
the public. Additionally, the libraries would have to "make reasonable
accommodation[s] ¡¦[for] qualified handicapped applicants
or employees unless it can be determined that it would impose undue
hardship on the employer" (American Libraries, June 1977,
p. 287)
