"Libraries Today: A Statement of the ALA Council." ALA Bulletin vol. 52, no. 3 (Mar. 1958) 180. A response to international events prompted the ALA Council to state: "public libraries must be supported" financially by both the nation and the states to adequately provide the educational foundations of the people as our country enters a new era. Where school and academic libraries meet the needs of students and scientists, the public library must be able to meet the self-education needs of all the citizens. The ALA Council adopted this statement on January 30, 1958.
"Report of the Action Development Committee, American Association of Library Trustees." ALA Bulletin vol. 52, no. 4 (Apr. 1958) 255.
The American Association of Library Trustees set forth guidelines for trustees to work towards making their libraries cultural centers and places where individuals and groups may go for self education. Emphasis was placed on increasing the local library trustees knowledge of library policies and their functions as liaison between the public and the library. Trustees were also encouraged to "become members of both their local and national library associations." It was also stated that each state should prepare a handbook of the state and local laws affecting libraries to serve as a guide for library trustees.
"Midwinter Institute on State Field Consultant Services." ALA Bulletin vol. 52, no. 4 (Apr. 1958) 271.
An Institute on the State Field Consultant Services, Jan. 24-26, 1958, focused on providing the "philosophy and background of field consultant services." Field consultants would act as facilitators to aid in the implementation of the Library Services Act and to strengthen local libraries and help develop regional libraries. Programs covered topics such as: "philosophy of state library extension work," knowing the population shifts and the power structure of the local area, materials a field consultant should have and how to work within groups.
