Part 6: Using Fugu to Store Files
At this point in the tutorial, you are familiar with how to access your
School of Information account using Terminal. Your School of Information
account can also be used to store files. In order to access this space,
we use a free Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) application called
Fugu. This application can be downloaded for free from Bevoware.
Once you have downloaded and installed the application, go ahead and
log in. The host name is “login.ischool.utexas.edu.” The
user name is your School of Information user name. The password is your
School of Information password (which you changed through Terminal).
This information is highlighted in the picture below:

Notice the two separate windows of Fugu once you have logged in – the
lefthand side shows the files on your computer, and the righthand side
shows the files stored in your School of Information server space. You
should already have a mail folder and a public_html folder in your server
space – the mail folder was set up automatically, and the public_html
folder is what you created while in Terminal. To create a new folder,
click the “New Folder” icon along the top navigation bar.
To upload files into your server space, simply drag them from the lefthand
window (on your computer) into the righthand window (on your server space).
When you are finished, you can log out by clicking the “Disconnect” button
on the top. Make sure that you always disconnect, as opposed to simply
shutting down the Fugu interface window.
Here’s Fugu in action:

What should you use your server space for? You can store any type of
file in this space, from Microsoft Word documents to pictures downloaded
from a digital camera to html files that you want to put on your web
page. Putting files on your server space means that you no longer need
to utilize disks, CD-ROMs, or other external media (which saves you
money!). Working on a group project at home and then meeting your group
members in the computer lab? Simply upload your file to your server
space, and then access it from the computer lab. When you’ve
finished making your changes, upload it to your server space once again.
Think of it as a safe space to store just about anything. The server
is backed up on a daily basis, so files stored on your server space
are safer than sitting on the hard drive of your computer.
