Future Research

There are several common elements present in these projects. Involving graduate students in the creation, development, and implementation of multimedia tutorials is an ongoing effort of the School of Information IT Lab. Staying current with technology trends and best practices in online education are an ongoing effort of the "Information in Cyberspace" teaching team. Working with the Glifos developers allows us to provide needed feedback on software features and design, which can then be applied to the Texas Legacy Project as well.

An ongoing need throughout all these projects is captioning for accessibility. One of the side benefits of captioning involves the increased ability to retrieve information from audio and video content by searching these captions. Early work on this can be found at the Google Video web site.

Future research for the IT Showcase 2006 includes:

  • Voice recognition integration with Glifos to improve captioning productivity.
  • Investigating porting Glifos to QuickTime using H.264 codecs and captioning.
  • Investigating porting Glifos to Flash video captioned output.
  • Researching video searching and information retrieval from captioned video assets in the Texas Legacy archive.
  • Use of multi-user audio and video chat tools to support online classes.
  • Improving and refining multimedia tutorial production workflow.
  • User testing of multimedia tutorials.
