Cookies are small files that certain web sites instruct your browser to save on your hard drive as you browse. On your next visit, unless instructed otherwise, your browser will upload these stored cookies to the site.
Cookies typically store information about your browsing habits and preferences when visiting a particular site. They can also be used to create a profile of you as a user based upon your previous visits.
By default, Mozilla will accept all cookies normally. Most of the time, then, cookie traffic is running back and forth behind the scenes. Your favorite online newspaper starts to greet you by name, for example. The online mapping tool remembers that you typically search for streets and businesses in Austin, Texas.
But this smacks of an invasion of privacy to many of us. Sometimes you'd just rather be anonymous.
Mozilla allows you to customize your cookie settings, so that you can block or accept as many cookies as you like. Keep in mind, though, that in many cases, cookies have been designed to personalize your browsing experience. You may, in fact, find that you prefer the shortcuts and personalized content they make possible.
To Open the Cookies Menu:
- Open the Edit Menu from the top toolbar. Choose Preferences.
- Scroll down the list of items in the sidebar to open the Privacy and Security options. Select Cookies. The Cookies menu will open next to the sidebar.
