Certificate of Advanced Study

|
ObjectivesWhile the master's degree is a professional requirement for many positions within the information field, many professionals choose to pursue further specialist education at some point in their career. The Certificate of Advanced Study program is tailored to meet the individual needs of experienced information professionals who 1) want to extend their study beyond the required 40 semester credit hours or 2) who already hold a master's degree in library and information studies or cognate fields, and who wish to update and augment their education, significantly expand their skills, and/or develop proficiencies in preparation for specialized positions and activities. The Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) enables a student to take courses from various departments and schools of the University as part of the program. Students must design their program of study in conjunction with, and receive approval from, a special area advisor. A minimum of (12) semester hours is required for the CAS; more semester hours may be necessary depending on the student's academic background and professional goals. Ordinarily, more than half of the course hours will be taken in the School of Information. A student may include no more than six (6) semester hours of upper-division undergraduate courses. The student's program must include an Individual Studies course (INF 381) or an INF 388 exit or experience course, which usually involves a paper or project designed to integrate the total CAS experience. Examples of Possible Areas of StudyThe field of Information Studies offers wide-ranging possibilities for advanced study of possible CAS program concentrations. Specialized CertificatesIn addition to the tailored CAS, the School of Information offers two specialized certificates, each of which has specific requirements. All may be taken in conjunction with the Master of Science in Information Studies degree. Conservation Preservation Administration See also: CAS admissions procedures
