Beijing Cultural Heritage Protection Centers Library & Resource Center

Position 1: Marketing / Administrative
Job Descriptions
Overview
The students will help develop and implement the first phase of a library and online resource center for the Beijing Cultural Heritage Protection Center (CHP), an official Chinese NGO operating in Beijing since 2003. (http://www.bjchp.org/)
With a network of approximately 150 volunteers, interns, and staff, CHP is widely recognized as the foremost authority on Beijing-related cultural preservation issues. CHP is aggressively expanding the scale and scope of its projects in Beijing and other areas of China.
Consequently, CHP requires a first-class Library & Resource Center (LRC) to serve the public, related organizations, and researchers. In addition to typical library holdings (books, maps, journals, etc), CHP coordinates several programs that produce a significant amount of information in various formats. A standardized system is needed for this information to be properly organized, stored, and made available to the public.
For the initial phase, CHP requires a strategic project plan and a basic, functioning LRC in place as soon as possible. CHP foresees the need for two Capstone students, interns or volunteers. The ability to speak and/or read Mandarin Chinese is an advantage but not required-- a strong technical background, extensive experience, or other relevant qualifications are equally important.
The participants will perform the majority of their work in the United States. However, CHP is seeking those who, at their own expense, will be able to spend approximately two weeks onsite at CHPs office in Beijing for consultation, final implementation, debugging, training, etc.
So, this is your chance to build a library in China and have a spectacular item on your resume to discuss during those future job interviews.
Position: Strategy Consultant
CHP is seeking an excellent researcher who understands how specialized, (primarily) digital libraries can best serve the public, and how such specialized libraries can best market themselves in the search for funding. The Strategy Consultant will develop a marketing proposal for the Library Resource Centers overall direction and development.
After gaining an understanding of CHPs goals, capabilities, limitations, and the players involved, the successful candidate will research other cultural heritage protection-focused organizations, organizations with similar resource centers, and grant funding opportunities.
The successful candidate will then produce a final proposal detailing the strategic vision of how the LRC should ultimately function and why it should function in that way. The proposal will include a project plan that explains any standards that would have to be met or operational changes that would need to be made, estimated cost and time considerations, and the various sources of funding available.
This position can be filled by a Capstone student, intern, or volunteer. It is not critical that the candidate understand spoken and/or written Mandarin Chinese, though it is an advantage.
