Austin State Hospital Volunteer Services Council

Introduction:

The Volunteer Services Council of the Austin State Hospital seeks a design and development team to lead a redesign of the VSC website (ashvolunteers.org). An ideal candidate will be experienced in coaching clients through the web visioning process, knowledgeable in current online giving trends, versed in CSS and PHP/SQL programming, and can work at reduced rates.

About the Austin State Hospital Volunteer Services Council:

The Volunteer Services Council (VSC) is an independent nonprofit that works in tandem with the Austin State Hospital (ASH) to enhance the quality of patient care. Through an all-volunteer board, the ASH VC organizes special event programming, fundraising for the acquisition of equipment for domestic spaces, and initiatives to educate the community on mental illness.

In the past year, the VSC hosted a patient art show (www.ashinsights.org), a 5k walk/run (the ASH Dash), a premiere of the acclaimed documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston, as well as numerous parties for the patients. The VSC also provided funds for the purchase of a large screen TV and sundry medical supplies.

VSC's work is essential to quality care for ASH patients. With a tight budget drawn from the Department of State Health Services, the ASH is under constant pressure to provide adequate and cost-effective care for children and adults under treatment. Board members are drawn to volunteer with the VSC for various reasons, but each of them ties back to our common purpose: to provide good and decent care to our community neighbors afflicted with a mental illness.

About the Proposal:

In anticipation of its sesquicentennial (150 yr) anniversary in 2007, ASH is producing a comprehensive marketing strategy to capture widespread community support. A core part of our initiative is the redesign of the VSC website (ashvolunteers.org).

The VSC is clear about the purpose of our website: to inspire volunteering and donations; to provide channels for charitable action; and to educate the community about persons with mental illness. In particular, we seek a website with:

  * Super easy and simple control of dynamic content

  * Credit card charging ability for online giving

  * Database features for constituent accounts / listserv management

The VSC seeks to complete a web redesign by the end of the year (Dec. 31, 2006). A small team (4-6) of PR and Tech committee constituents will be available for working with the external design team on the project.
