Title:Cataloging -- Combining Collections    [ more details ]
Submitted:2004-08-20 00:00:00
When: Open
Genre:Cataloging
Salary:Unpaid
Desc:Project: Combining 3 separate collections of Jewish children’s books into one collection in a library running on Athena/Sagebrush library automation system. Some weeding and identification of multiple copies will need to be done.

One collection has already been cataloged in a modified Dewey system and the MARC records are already loaded in the Athena/Sagebrush online catalog.

The other two collections will be cataloged like the first, using an online cataloging tool provided by MARCIVE, Inc called WEBSELECT. Students will be instructed on how to use this system, and will also be taught what modifications have been made to Dewey to accommodate the specific needs of a Jewish collection.

Once the MARC records are received, the students will be instructed on how to import these records into the Athena/Sagebrush system. Any necessary cataloging modifications will be made before the collections are merged.

A collection of adult fiction will also need to be cataloged using the cataloging tool from MARCIVE, Inc. This will be a separate collection.

Students may be asked to assist in putting on spine labels and bar codes and other processing necessary.

Time permitting, students may be asked to assist in adding new patrons to the Athena/Sagebrush automated system.

Knowledge students will acquire:
Cataloging using MARCIVE, Inc.’s WEBSELECT cataloging tool.
Using Athena/Sagebrush automation system to catalog, import MARC records, merge collections, and input new patrons.
