Title:Historical Video Analysis    [ more details ]
Submitted:2005-06-14 00:00:00
When: Open
Genre:Reference
Salary:Unpaid
Desc:Fire Museum Project: Analysis of a 1953 movie recorded
at an Austin Fire Station documenting the successful
integration of African American firefighters into the
austin Fire Department.

Background: In 1952, Austin was the first municipal
fire department in the State of Texas to hire African
American firefighters. At this time, segregation was
at its peak in the South, and the City of Austin
decided to try and integrate the fire department due
to the request of East Austin community leaders. Three
African American firefighters were hired in September
of 1952, and all were placed at one station in East
Austin. In 1953, the Caucasian Captain filmed a 9 1/2
minute home movie documenting the successful
integration of the fire station. The movie is filled
with scenes of symbolism, including black and white
firefighters eating at the same table, sitting
together, and working side by side.

Project Objectives: The Austin Fire Museum would like
an intern to analyze the movie and write a companion
essay (pamphlet) to be featured with the film. The
document would include a narrative of the firefighters
in the film, the historical significance of racial
integration, and any other information pertinent to
this time period.
