Title:Archivist    [ more details ]
Submitted:2004-08-26 00:00:00
When: Open
Genre:Archives
Salary:Unpaid
Desc:Develop and begin implementation of a comprehensive archive program for the Austin Nature & Science Center. ANSC was first established in 1960. An archive program needs to be established to
1) Determine what material should be preserved
2) Develop policy and procedures for material preservation
3) Review existing materials and process them for preservation
4) Develop cataloging and retrieval procedures

The ANSC mission is and has been "to install in our students and visitors an appreciation of the complexity of natural systems, a feeling of responsibility for their preservation and care and an awareness that [humans are] a part of – not apart from – these systems.

"The means to this end begin with curiosity and interest, stimulated by qualified leadership and real life involvement activities. Such ‘hands on’ experiences provide the participants with opportunities to discover for themselves (using the senses as basic tools of learning) the marvels and truths of their natural environment.

"This appreciation of nature is the key to the motivation of a conservationist. As Joseph Wood Krutch said, ‘Conservation is not enough – the thing that is missing is love – some feeling for, as well as understanding of, the inclusive community of rocks and soil, plants and animals of which we are a part.’”

This project is essential for forging connections to our common heritage and maintaining the cultural record of this important Austin institution.
