Desc:The mission of this project is to provide a web based index to the publications of the Society for Commercial Archeology. Goals are two-fold: 1) Produce an index to publications. This index is intended to be published as a searchable database mounted on the SCA's web site. 2) Produce guidelines or a manual for future publications indexing. If time is available, the SCA would also like to look into guidelines for scanning and mounting out of print publications on their web site.

The Society for Commercial Archeology was established in 1977. It is the oldest national organization devoted to the buildings, artifacts, structures, signs, and symbols of the 20th-century commercial landscape. SCA web site is located at http://www.sca-roadside.org/

Title:Authority Work in an Architectural Archive    [ more details ]
Submitted:2002-09-23 00:00:00
When: Open
Genre:Cataloging

Desc:Alexander Architectural Archive – Authorities Capstone Project

Under the supervision of the Curator, you will investigate issues surrounding authority work, develop and build a local Name Authority File, and produce authority work procedures for the Alexander Architectural Archive (AAA).

Goals:
* Develop objectives of what purpose the authority file will serve
* Identify problems in research due to a lack of authority control
* Consult with specialists that work under the subjects of art and architecture (cataloguers, large architectural records repositories, etc.) to see how they develop, search and store authority files.
* Develop a Name Authority File for the AAA. It should be a database that not only includes the authoritative heading for each index term, but also a record that documents the sources that have been searched.
* Develop search strategies for finding authorities in recognized sources (Library of Congress, the Union List of Artist Names (ULAN), RLIN, and the Avery Index).
* For names without authorities, develop in-house guidelines on producing name authorities. Use the International Standard Archival Authority Record for Corporate Bodies, Persons and Families as a resource.
* Investigate possibility of formal submission of new terms to an authoritative source (ULAN?).
* Using finding aids available on the Texas Archival Resources Online (TARO) website and in the AAA reading room, identify criteria for selecting names to be checked for authority (ex. architects, collaborators and select clients).
* Compile a list of names that need authority work.
* Identify authorities for this AAA and build the authority file.
* Review terms already assigned in the AAA's collection MARC records and EAD files and enhance as needed.
* Create a manual for authority work in the Alexander Architectural Archive.
