Title:Preservation of Letterpress Copybooks    [ more details ]
Submitted:2005-02-01 00:00:00
When: Spring 2005
Genre:Archives
Salary:Unpaid
Desc:Throughout its collections, the Center for American History has many 19th century letterpress copybooks. Copybooks were used to record outgoing correspondence, written pages were pressed into the leaves of the book, transferring the ink into the book. These materials are now in such a condition that they are all but unreadable, as the ink has faded so drastically in the intervening years. In most cases, the original correspondence is unavailable or nonexistent. The goals of my project are twofold: one, to address the physical pre4servation of the original materials; two, to enable researchers to access the text of these materials. Ultimately, the fruits of this research project will be used as background and data for a National Endowment for the Humanities grant proposal.
