Title:Libraries 101 - Workshop for Non-Librarians    [ more details ]
Submitted:2002-03-07 00:00:00
When: Fall 2003
Genre:Training
Salary:Negotiable
Desc:This project is to develop a course that provides an overview of the field of library and information science; e.g., "Introduction to Library and Information Science" or a similar title. The target audience will consist of Austin Public Library staff who are non-librarians; e.g., clerks, pages, administrative staff, and other APL staff who have not attended library school. This course should focus on the big picture and should bring the learner from the point of "I don't know what I don't know" about the field to "I know what I don't know." After attending the training, the participant will be more familiar with the common library roles and services (e.g., cataloging, circulation support, reference), issues and problems encountered (filtering of Internet sites, unruly customers), terms, history, changes in the field that impact services and products, a basic understanding of what customers want, future trends, special needs of customers (access to facilities, needs of homeschoolers) and more. This broad overview is intended to be useful to all library staff in understanding the field and the services and products that we provide to our customers. The course may even serve to interest some in pursuing a career as a librarian. A portion of the class should address the need to provide excellent customer service and may address how to meet some of the challenges in doing so. The end product would consist of a course outline, handouts, trainer notes, and should be delivered two different times to allow more APL staff to attend. The course materials should be provided to APL with full rights for APL staff to provide the class at a future time. The length of the class should be three hours (can be negotiated but should be a minimum of two hours and no more than four hours) and it should be delivered on two different dates to allow more APL staff to attend. APL facilities and equipment will be used for the course delivery.
