Degrees:
B.A (summa cum laude) in English, 1994, from Occidental College; M.S. in Information Science, 2000, from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; Ph.D. in information and Library Science, 2003, from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Bio:
Bio: Before coming to Texas Miles was a student, then a post-doctoral researcher at the University of North Carolina. Miles has received numerous awards and fellowships, including the A. R. Zipf Fellowship in information management and a fellowship to study at the Santa Fe Institute in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He is also a member of Phi Beta Kappa. In research and teaching Miles' work is concerned with empirical (especially statistical) methods for organizing information. He works on problems in data mining, machine learning, and information retrieval.
