Application Process
In order to apply to the School of Information Doctoral Preservation program, interested persons should consult the following resources:

Applications will be accepted in November 2008 for studies to begin in fall 2009. The deadlines below are not negotiable.

Prospective Student Commitments
As detailed in the fellowship program proposal submitted to and awarded by IMLS, by accepting an IMLS doctoral preservation fellowship, a student must agree to the following:
- Satisfy all requirements of the PhD program at the School of Information.
- Adhere to the specific academic and other requirements for the doctoral preservation fellows in the doctoral program.
- Assume an appointment as one of the following after graduation from the program:
- a faculty member in a program of library and information science
- a director of a library or other information agency
- an administrator in a preservation program in a library, museum, or like venue.
- Serve five hours per week as a research assistant for one semester of each of the three years of IMLS support, assisting with one of the student’s doctoral advisor’s courses.
- Make research or panel presentations both in the School of Information and at professional meetings.
- Attend an annual professional association meeting and present research during the second year of study.
- Commit to a six-week internship at an institution that matches the student’s professional interests in summer 2010 (for students beginning doctoral study in fall 2008) or in summer 2011 (for students beginning doctoral study in fall 2009).
- Help plan a preservation conference sponsored by the Kilgarlin Center.
- Participate in annual surveys of professional activities for up to five years after graduation.
If a student fails to complete the PhD program at the School of Information for any reason, the student must reimburse the University of Texas at Austin for some or all of the monies received under the auspices of grant funds awarded to UT-Austin by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
