Information Specialist The Center for AIDS: Hope & Remembrance Project 1407 Hawthorne Houston, Texas 77006 Organization: The Center for AIDS: Hope & Remembrance Project (The CFA) is a communitybased, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization specializing in HIV research/treatment information and advocacy. Since 1995, The CFA has operated as the premier source of HIV information in Houston and the Southwestern US. The CFA is dedicated to educating those affected by HIV/AIDS, as well as their friends, families, and healthcare providers, about the latest developments in HIV/AIDS treatment and research. This work is accomplished through direct education and outreach, a walk-in information center, freely distributed patient-oriented and professional publications, and special programs and meetings. Position Title: Information Specialist Description: This is a full-time position, reporting to the Executive Director. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, • Information retrieval from bibliographic and clinical research databases (PubMed/MEDLINE, ClinicalTrials.gov, etc.), library catalogs, research institution and university websites, and other Internet resources. • Management and organization of The CFA’s walk-in, storefront, Information Center. - Organizes, updates, and maintains The CFA Information Center inventory including stock brochures and publications from other organizations, fact sheets on HIV-related topics, and relevant medical and research articles for The CFA’s reference collection. - Assists walk-in clients with their information needs, including use of the Information Center’s Internet workstations for specialized searches. • Providing support for The CFA’s educational and publications programming. - Gives presentations to groups of HIV+ patients and HIV/AIDS service organization staff, on HIV-related information and how to access additional information. - Assists the Director of Education and Outreach on developing and updating public presentations. - Writes articles and gathers data for CFA publications, including its patient newsletter and fact sheets. - Compiles the RITA! Weekly Newsletter, an HIV treatment and research news bulletin comprising reports from a variety of Web-based news sources. The newsletter is distributed by fax and e-mail. Qualifications: • Bachelor or Master of Science degree preferred. • Computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Excel — familiarity with desktop publishing and Adobe Acrobat software is a plus. • Expertise in Internet-based information searching and evaluation • Experience in writing, technical writing, editing, or journalism • Teaching and/or public speaking experience • Previous college-level courses in Natural and/or Human Sciences, such as molecular biology, cell biology, and biochemistry (not necessarily HIV-specific) are very desirable, since this individual will need to learn and understand the science of HIV and principles of its treatment. • Bilingual ability (fluency in Spanish) is preferred. Compensation: $35,000 (median) plus benefits, including 4 weeks (20 days) of vacation per year. Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.
