In Conjunction with the University’s Capital Campaign, the iSchool
student body is making a philanthropic contribution: giving our time
to help the community.

The Challenge:

Get 25% of current iSchool students to donate a minimum of 2 hours of
their time to a community service project for a cause unrelated to a
class requirement.

Benefits to Students:

Make a difference in the community

Network with professionals

Make career connections

Build your resume

Increase community awareness of the iSchool

What Counts as Community Service?

In this campaign, we will include any type of community service our students engage in throughout the semester until December 18th.

How Do I Find Service Opportunities?

We have partnered with Austin Public Libraries to provide opportunities that range from all interests. Search the iSchool Career
Services website for a complete list of volunteer opportunities.

If you would like to participate in this project, please email Cassie Alvarado.

Already Contributing to the Community? Need to Log Hours?

Volunteer hours from the Fall semester through December 18th will contribute to campaign totals. To log participation, just email Cassie Alvarado providing:

iSchool Students Support Reading Rock Stars

Materials for Children (INF 382E) ischool graduate students volunteered 40 hours...

Materials for Children (INF 382E) ischool graduate students volunteered 40 hours to write curriculum guides for books written by the 2009 Texas Book Festival Reading Rock Stars. This year’s RRS authors are Derrick Barnes, Mac Barnett, Psuedonymous Bosch, Francisco Jimenez, Jose Lozano, Katherine Marsh, Rene Saldana, Jr., Jon Scieszka, Carmen Tafolla, Samantha Vamos.

Reading Rock Stars, an outreach program, cultivates interest and skills in reading and writing by bringing children’s authors to economically disadvantaged Texas schools. Teachers in the school prepare students by using the curriculum guides before the author visits. Every child in the program receives an autographed book from the author that may be the first book that the child owns. Reading Rock Stars donates a complete set of the authors’ books to each participating school.
