In 2001\, Wikipedia was launched on the premise that everyone on the Internet working together could assemble an encyclopedia of all human knowledge. In order to manage article production\, Wikipedians engage in conversations about how they know what they know\, how well accepted different theories and ideas are\,\nwhat constitutes a reliable information source\, and how an article should be written to educate readers. From an information literacy perspective\, this is precisely the kind of reflective discussion that is desired in public discourse. For my dissertation work\, I built specialized wiki tools to support writing activities in high school classrooms.\n\nIn this talk\, I will explore knowledge-related practice on wikis and present findings from four years of empirical research with wikis in both formal and informal learning contexts. In addition to my work on Wikipedia\, I have conducted iterative cycles of design and research in high school science classes where she examined how writing on a public wiki brings about opportunities for reflection and learning. I suggest that user-generated content represents not only new forms of information that consumers must learn to evaluate\, but also creates unique learning opportunities as young people engage more actively in the cycle of public information production and consumption.\n\nBIO Andrea Forte is a Ph.D. candidate in Human-Centered Computing in the School of Interactive Computing at Georgia Tech. Her research examines how social technologies support learning and information sharing. Andrea's dissertation work is the NSF-sponsored project Science Online\, a specially designed wiki where high school students write about science to build a public information resource. Although similar in conception\, the focus of my research is on what has been called the extension or flip side of reading as a literacy practice - the act of writing and recording. My study of writing and recording is focused on everyday texts\, with an emphasis on what it means to be literate in the school and the workplace\, and an associated study of the texts and genres of those domains. In this talk I investigate a particular historical context (the early decades of the 4-H movement) in which children and young adults were taught how to create and use everyday documents\, with a particular focus on the reports and record books that 4-H members created as part of their club activities. My work looks at written literacy as a social activity and in the process I uncover the literacy practices that were in place in this specific domain\, I examine the purposes and whose purposes these literacies served\, and I investigate what it meant for a young person to be literate in this particular time and context. \n\nBio: Ciaran B. To embrace this change\, governments\, companies\, and social scientists are demanding effective document analysis tools to search and classify opinions from various stakeholders and the general public. Opinion mining has become an important component in the solutions for e-democracy and business intelligence. \n \nA central problem in opinion mining is sentiment classification\, which aims to identify the polarity of opinions in texts. Traditional topical text categorization techniques have been utilized to classify opinions in customer reviews with high accuracy. Extending similar techniques to opinion classification in broader contexts like political debate\, however\, resulted in much lower accuracy. Why is it hard to identify the polarity of political opinions? How can we improve current techniques for better accuracy? \n\nIn this talk\, I will firstly present the analysis of the characteristics of political opinion expressions\, which not only distinguish the task of political opinion classification from review classification\, but also shed light on new approaches to incorporate these characteristics. I will then describe a unified approach of predicting the opinions on different political issues through the estimation of the opinion holders' ideological positions or party affiliations.\n\nBio: Bei Yu received her PhD from the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. One popular approach is to ask participants whether or not messages are helpful in order to then guide others to interesting content. Adopting a well-established framework for assessing data quality\, I examine the nature of "helpfulness." In particular\, I analyze a set of consumer product reviews from Amazon.com\, deriving 22 measures quantifying their textual properties\, authors' reputations and product characteristics. A confirmatory factor analysis reveals five underlying quality dimensions representing reviewers' reputations in the community\, the topical relevancy of the reviews\, the ease of understanding them\, their believability and objectivity. A correlation and regression analysis confirms that these dimensions are related to the helpfulness scores assigned by community participants. However\, it also uncovers a strong relationship between the chronological ordering of reviews and helpfulness\, which both community participants and designers should keep in mind when using this method of social navigation.\n\nBio: Jahna Otterbacher received her PhD from the University of Michigan's School of Information. Our research in the Center for LifeLong Learning & Design (L3D) explores theoretical foundations and designs and assesses socio-technical environments for this transformation. We have explored several major frameworks over the last decade including:\no meta-design\, focused on "design for designers"\, and aimed at defining and creating social and technical infrastructures in which new forms of collaborative design can take place by allowing users to become co-designers and co-developers\; and\no social creativity\, focused on transcending the individual human mind by exploiting transdisciplinary collaboration and diversity. I'll argue\, applying ontology design recommendations proposed by N. Guarino\nand C. Welty\, that while FRBR may be on the right track it needs to be "refactored"\, at least if taken as a general ontology. Specifically I'll show that the four Group 1 entity types are roles\, not types and then sketch a refactored FRBR where the non-bibliographic entities that are genuine types take on bibliographic roles in certain social circumstances. The resulting\nview of bibliographic entities\, that they are not kinds of things\, but roles that certain kinds of things have in particular social contexts\, is consistent with John Searle's notion of a cascade of social facts established through collective intentionality. This revision is confirmed by its contribution to the analysis of two previously identified puzzles\, one regarding the\nontological status of an XML Document\, the other the distinction between authorial and editorial markup. Although this may be considered a somewhat\ntheoretical exercise in conceptual foundations I believe it also contributes to a general framework for data curation and digital preservation. Human centered computing is an emerging\, interdisciplinary field broadly concerned with computing and computational artifacts as they relate to the human condition. In this talk\, Dr. Gilbert will discuss 2 human centered computing research projects aimed at addressing major societal problems\; electronic voting and affirmative action. Prime III is a multimodal electronic voting system research project. It allows people to vote using voice and/or touch. Individuals that can't read\, see\, hear or those with physical disabilities\, e.g. no arms\, can all privately and independently vote using this multimodal interface. This presentation will give a demonstration of the Prime III multimodal interface and describe findings from usabilities studies\, mock elections and organization elections. Applications Quest is a data mining tool developed by Dr. Gilbert to address affirmative action. Specifically\, Applications Quest provides a means for obtaining holistic diversity without giving racial preference in compliance with the 2003 University of Michigan U.S. Supreme Court decisions on the use of race in admissions. Both of these research projects have national implications and have not gone unnoticed by the U.S. Congress\, State and local governments\, institutions of higher learning\, private companies and others.\nBIO Dr. Juan E. Gilbert is the T-SYS Distinguished Associate Professor in the Computer Science and Software Engineering Department and a Fellow in the Center for Governmental Services at Auburn University where he directs the Human-Centered Computing (HCC) Lab. Dr. Gilbert has research projects in spoken language systems\, advanced learning technologies\, usability and accessibility\, Ethnocomputing (Culturally Relevant Computing) and databases/data mining. He has published more than 70 articles\, given more than 100 talks and obtained more than $4 million dollars in research funding in his eight years at Auburn University. In 2002\, Dr. Gilbert was named one of the nation's top African-American Scholars by Diverse Issues in Higher Education. He was recently named a national role model by Minority Access Inc. At Auburn University\, Dr. Gilbert has been honored with the Auburn University Alumni Engineering Council Junior Faculty Research Award\, Auburn University Alumni Outstanding Minority Achievement Award and the Auburn University Distinguished Diversity Researcher Award. He is also a National Associate of the National Research Council of the National Academies\, an ACM Distinguished Speaker and a Senior Member of the IEEE Computer Society. Recently\, Dr. Gilbert was named a Modern-Day Technology Leader by the Black Engineer of the Year Award Conference\, the Pioneer of the Year by the National Society of Black Engineers and he received the Black Data Processing Association (BDPA) Epsilon Award for Outstanding Technical Contribution. Dr. Gilbert recently testified before the Congress on the Bipartisan Electronic Voting Reform Act of 2008 for his innovative work in electronic voting. In 2006\, Dr. Gilbert was honored with a mural painting in New York City by City Year New York\, a non-profit organization that unites a diverse group of 17 to 24 year-old young people for a year of full-time\, rigorous community service\, leadership development\, and civic engagement. Title: The Architecture of an Information Discipline
\nAbstract: Information is a rich field with a poor story. Despite the unprecedented levels of data and information technology in our lives\, intellectual fault-lines perpetuate divisions and splinter research and education efforts. In the present talk I will consider a variety of conceptions of the information field and argue for shifting our views of information from a commodity model to an experiential perspective and in so doing emphasize the centrality of appropriate theories of information as process rather than outcome in human activities.

Digital records management products require that workers superimpose on their work practices a set of requirements that from their perspective often seems outdated or irrelevant. This has come to a head with the demands for Web 2.0 technologies to be implemented in so-called ?Enterprise 2.0? networked working environments and has been recognized in some early responses from records managers looking toward a hybrid classification environment. But first records managers have to deal with the fact that the design and affordances of the (recently) much-maligned desktop metaphor militates against the disciplining of the record\, as it has since its inception. In this presentation I will discuss both the records manager's problem and the history and implications of the desktop metaphor and its evolving manifestations. Much less is known about knowledge transfer problems associated with transformational technologies\, which afford the creation\, modification and manipulation of digital artifacts. Yet\, these technologies play a critical role in offshoring by allowing the distribution of work at the task level\, what we call task-based offshoring. For example\, computer-aided engineering applications transform input like physical dimensions\, location coordinates\, and material properties into computational models that can be shared electronically among engineers around the world as they work together on analysis tasks. Digital artifacts created via transformational technologies often embody implicit knowledge that must be correctly interpreted to successfully act upon the artifacts. To explore what problems might arise in interpreting this implicit knowledge across time and space\, and how individuals might remedy these problems\, we studied a firm that sent engineering tasks from home sites in Mexico and the U.S. to an offshore site in India. Despite having proper formal education and ample tool skills\, the Indian engineers had difficulty interpreting the implicit knowledge embodied in artifacts sent to them from Mexico and the U.S. To resolve and prevent the problems that subsequently arose\, individuals from the home sites developed new work practices to transfer occupational knowledge to the offshore site. I discuss three of those practices in this talk: defining requirements\, monitoring progress\, fixing returns\, routing tasks strategically\, and filtering quality. The extent to which sending engineers in our study were free from having to enact these new work practices because on-site coordinators acted on their behalf predicted their perceptions of the effectiveness of the offshoring arrangement\, but Indian engineers preferred learning from sending engineers\, not on-site coordinators. Our study contributes to theories of knowledge transfer and has practical implications for managing task-based offshoring arrangements.\n\nBio: Diane E. It is generally accepted that mental models help people understand a system\, navigate through the system\, and predict the system?s behavior in future instances. Mental models are dynamic and evolving. However\, most current studies treat mental models as a static construct\, focusing on describing components and characteristics of mental models\, as well as mental models? impact on users? information searching behavior. Little research has been done on the dynamic processes of users constructing mental models to make sense of the system. Knowledge about how mental models come into form during people?s first encounter with a system could be a particularly rich source for generating practical implications for system design\, user modeling\, and user instruction. In this talk\, I will report my research on the ways in which people construct their mental models of an information rich web space\, MedlinePlus\, in a search session. You are able to view how people?s mental models of the system change as a result of a constructional interaction with the system. A new method of eliciting mental models will also be presented. \n\nBio: Yan Zhang is a Ph.D. candidate in the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. My pilot study suggested that the brain used the same semantic system underlying language processing when the test participants were performing decision-making tasks with pictograms and Chinese characters as visual stimuli. It is plausible that people read icons as logograms instead of pictures. My future dissertation work will focus on a more detailed experiment that compares concreteness and abstractness of icons\, pictures\, words and logograms with fMRI methods. I expect that my findings can contribute to the ongoing development of neuroergonomics and brain-computer interfaces that will measure and adapt to the user's brain signals. Because discoveries culminate at fixed points in time\, discoveries can serve as an outcome metric for both inquirers and the information professionals who support inquiry. Three models of the discovery process\, based on the author?s case analysis of mathematical and scientific discoveries\, are first presented\, with suggested ways to accelerate discovery via each model. Discussion then turns to an exploration of developing a super-ordinate level of information behavior theory applicable to all fields and kinds of inquiry to guide the development of various kinds of supportive information architectures and information services. Last\, a 2020 AD strategic vision for LIS and i-School education is proposed\, which involves augmenting information behavior theory with a general science and art of search\, research and accelerated discovery\, and passing on such knowledge to students. As professional practitioners\, whether in libraries\, archives\, museums or other organizations\, these alumni will be on the front lines of facilitating their clientele?s accelerated personal\, professional or scholarly discovery. Some of these people turn to the Internet where they join ?small worlds? of people facing similar crises. One substantial community of these silent\, personal crises is found in the survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV). Survivors of all ages are making increasing use of online communities\; the next generation of survivors is growing up with the Internet at the heart of their social communication norms. Understanding the complexities of IPV information experiences as shared in online forums can help generate more effective development of information support structures.\n\nAn initial\, single-scholar study of a smaller\, older segment of one community?s postings indicated a strong tendency among these survivors to actively avoid agency aid and information. In this study\, ten months of online discussion in this web-embedded\, bulletin board community of IPV survivors were analyzed along two axis?: relationship stage and information component. The stages were broad: in a relationship\, leaving a relationship\, and left a relationship. The information components were straightforward: information needs\, barriers\, and resources. This talk presents the first stage of that study (i.e.\, the intersections between relationship stage and information component) and shares plans for the second stage of the study. However\, many kinds of new media artifacts\, videogames specifically\, pose significant challenges to collecting institutions: there are budgetary and legal constraints in collecting\, much less providing access to that material\; the artifacts are inherently complex from both a cultural and technological perspective\; and they are inherently ephemeral\, which defy traditional representation\, preservation and collection development policies. In order to maintain their appeal and significance\, cultural institutions must create new collection development and access models to handle these materials. This applies not only to videogames\, but to other kinds of new media artifacts as well.\n\nWithin the new media community\, there is some discussion recommending the collection of surrogates (like fan\, industry and critically generated supplementary materials)\, in addition to the primary artifact\, for the purpose of representation and future access. This presentation will discuss the findings of a study conducted to investigate the relative merits of different kinds of surrogates in the representation of a specific MMORPG videogame: World of Warcraft. For example\, on community question answering sites we find posted queries like ?How have dramatic shifts in terrorists resulted in an equally dramatic shift in terrorist organizations?? or "Are concerns raised by the media justified about global warming and stem cell research?" While natural\nlanguage (NL) allows users to easily express such arbitrarily complicated queries\, search engines generally perform poorly on them. On the other hand\, while a more effective keyword query usually exists\, it is often difficult for users to find these effective\nkeywords. Consequently\, supporting complex search remains an open challenge.\n\nI adopt the approach of allowing people to naturally express their questions and investigate how automatic retrieval for such questions can be improved. To this end\, I describe a learning framework for better\nestimating traditional term-based retrieval models by building on recent ideas from ?learning to rank?. Given examples of queries and their relevant documents\, the model learns to predict effective term weights for NL queries\, and the feature space can be incrementally extended from terms to modeling term interactions or\nother latent representations. Empirical evaluation shows this better estimation improves retrieval accuracy across several datasets.\n\nBio: Matt Lease is a Ph.D. candidate in Computer Science at Brown University\, working in the Brown Laboratory for Linguistic Information Processing\n(BLLIP)\, and a Visiting Researcher at the University of Massachusetts Amherst\, working in the Center for Intelligent Information Retrieval (CIIR). My research engages ethnographic methods to understand how ad hoc visualizations play a role as ?external cognitive aids? in data analysis. I hypothesize that closer coupling of algorithmic data analysis and visualization design can provide greater analytic power. In a synthesis of information visualization and natural language processing\, my research approaches visualization of language from several perspectives\, including visual text analytics incorporating text mining\, information retrieval\, and visualization\, and explaining computational linguistic models with visualization. In this talk I will present an overview of several recent projects.\n\nIn Parallel Tag Clouds\, I created an analysis system for discovering and exploring the linguistic and content differences amongst the hundreds of thousands of decisions of the US Courts of Appeals. Early feedback from legal scholars has been quite positive. VisLink is a general visualization system that allows for the reuse of the spatial dimension and the ability to interactively link multiple visualizations in 3D space. With VisLink we can make discoveries about links between seemingly unrelated data. Finally\, I will demonstrate Bubble Sets\, a method for overlaying set relations onto existing visualizations. Bubble Sets can be overlaid atop custom-designed information layouts as well as general purpose visualizations such as scatter plots.\n\nBio: Christopher Collins is a PhD candidate in computational linguistics\, information visualization\, and human-computer interaction at the University of Toronto\, where he received his M.Sc. in the area of computational linguistics. These outcomes\, however\, depend on the social\, organizational\, and intellectual conditions under which students conduct research. Large-scale comparative studies suggest that computer science undergraduate researchers participate in fewer of the activities that lead to membership in a "culture of research." This interview-based study illuminates the experiences of both undergraduates and their faculty research mentors in computer science summer and academic year programs. Twenty-five undergraduates and 31 faculty mentors\, the majority women\, were interviewed. Their stories reveal best and worst case research conditions for students\, the special benefits to women who have experienced harassment in their classes\, unconscious biases of faculty\, the wisdom of faculty who guide undergraduates to successful research outcomes\, and faculty's perceptions of benefits for themselves\, their departments\, and the students they mentor. Dr. Barker will also discuss ways in which this work\, which appears in ACM Transactions on Computing Education\, has relevance in our School of Information. From an historical perspective\, blogs\, wikis\, discussion forums\, electronic preprints\, open notebooks\, shared data repositories\, open source software\, and other technology-driven resources have appeared virtually overnight. The traditional academic system that places a premium on single-author\, peer-reviewed publications has\, not surprisingly\, yet to make much progress in recognizing and placing value on these new forms of contributions. This is a problem. The motivated researcher has an expanding range of ways to share expertise\, feedback\, methods\, data\, and tools that arguably can accelerate scientific progress but this motivation (especially for the untenured) can be tempered by the knowledge that time and energy devoted to these forms of intellectual work will not be valued in the same way as traditional forms.\n\nIn this talk\, I'll explore this issue by describing some of the emerging\, non-traditional ways in which researchers are making intellectual contributions and discuss both the importance of and challenges to determining ways to assign value to them. In the first half of the talk I'll describe two of my current projects as concrete examples that illustrate the tension between traditional and non-traditional academic work: The Open Video Digital Library Toolkit and eMicrobes: A Digital Library for Learning Infectious Diseases. In the second half of the talk I'll share some simpler examples of non-traditional research contributions\, acknowledge some of the challenges in placing value on these contributions\, and seek thoughts from the audience on this topic.\n LOCATION:UTA 5.522 CLASS:PUBLIC STATUS:CONFIRMED TRANSP:OPAQUE END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART:20100126T211500Z DTEND:20100126T224500Z DTSTAMP:20091125T102101Z UID:20090905210005.321946qq46gg25es@www.ischool.utexas.edu CREATED:20090906T020005Z LAST-MODIFIED:20091120T230308Z SUMMARY:Research Colloquium: Clay Spinuzzi ORGANIZER;CN=bill:mailto:bill DESCRIPTION:Secret Sauce and Snake Oil: Net Work at a Search Marketing Company\n\nSearch engine optimization (SEO) has a bad reputation as "snake oil": the work of shysters and frauds. But at one search marketing company\, this work is rigorous and complex\, and the company works hard to build its positive reputation with clients. Drawing on various bodies of network theories and network-related work (Castells\; Drucker\; Arquilla and Ronfeldt\; Latour)\, I examine how this company's workers adapt to an ever-changing set of contingencies through an agile networked organization\, systematize their work\, analyze their clients' audiences\, and build trust with their clients. I conclude by pointing to implications for theorizing this sort of work.\n\nBio: I'm an associate professor of rhetoric at The University of Texas at Austin. It is therefore increasingly viewed as key to student learning in science classes. However\, argumentation rarely occurs in science classes. The literature has identified two key challenges to engaging students in this complex practice: 1) traditional classroom activities often inhibit the social discourse of critically attending to\, and evaluating alternative understandings and 2) it can be difficult for students to revise their own ideas during argumentative discussions. There exists a general consensus in science education that these challenges emerge out of students? naďve epistemologies of science. For example\, researchers have found that students typically view science as a static body of facts that are disconnected from their everyday experiences and common sense. This belief makes discussions in which students are asked to evaluate one another?s ideas and to collaborate to revise those ideas nonsensical: if science is a set of disembodied facts then the students? job is to memorize rather than construct that information.\n\nIn this talk\, I present an alternative explanation for the struggles associated with scientific argumentation. Namely\, students do not interpret argumentative discussions as opportunities to engage with one another?s ideas or to revise their own ideas. I support this conclusion by first demonstrating the range of ways that students can interpret argumentative discussions and second presenting a micro-analysis of one class in which I examine students? understandings of the argumentative discussion and the factors that influence that understanding.\n\nBio: Leema Berland is an assistant professor of science education at the University of Texas in Austin. She earned a Ph.D. in the Learning Sciences from Northwestern University in 2008 and was a doctoral fellow with the NSF funded Center for Curriculum Materials in Science (2003-2008). In addition\, her work earned the best paper award at the National Association of Research in Science Teaching conference in 2006. Leema is broadly interested in facilitating and studying students as they learn science by engaging in the discourse practice of scientific argumentation. In this work\, she focuses on understanding how students interpret the argumentative discussions\, how those interpretations influence their participation in the discourse\, and why they interpret it in the ways that they do. Each of these questions is designed to better understand the dynamics of how and why students are able (or unable) to productively engage in argumentative discourse. First\, legitimacy of research in general is concisely discussed. Next\, the study that is the basis for this presentation is described. Then\, the method used to identify the legitimacy issues is presented\, and finally\, legitimacy issues are discussed. Advances in the manufacturing of OLED-based printable\, customizable displays\, will only serve to diversify further the characteristics of our computing devices. How will this infrastructure present information content effectively\, much of which is optimized for rendering on desktop or laptop computers? My dissertation work addresses the issues in adapting content to suit the characteristics of the devices that render it. Understanding the essential elements of information forms is critical for developing device-specific adaptations. In this talk\, I will describe the results of a study I conducted to understand the characteristics of images and discuss a future study to explore the characteristics of textual documents. The Library School Experience and Early Professional Work During Progressive Era Texas and Illinois ORGANIZER;CN=bill:mailto:bill DESCRIPTION:Library Spirit! The Library School Experience and Early Professional Work During Progressive Era Texas and Illinois\n\nAbstract\n\nIn the late 19th century\, librarians received training through apprenticeship programs within libraries or through completed organized programs taught in an academic setting. This reader's theatre performance presents a portrait of the library education experiences and early professional work of individuals who attended two formal librarian education programs: the Illinois Library School and the Library Training Class at the University of Texas.\n\nIn 1897\, the four-year-old Department of Library Economy at Armour Institute in Chicago was transferred to the University of Illinois and became known as the Illinois Library School. Katharine Lucinda Sharp directed the School during its first decade\, resigning in 1907 to return to New York as vice-president of Melvil Dewey's Lake Placid Club. Albert S. Wilson succeeded Sharp as director from 1907 to 1909. He was succeeded by Phineas L. Windsor\, who served as director to 1940. Prior to this time\, Windsor was employed at the University of Texas as its library director where he inherited the Library Training Class established by his predecessor\, Benjamin Wyche. In 1900\, the University started a two-semester long Library Training Class. The class was initiated under pressure from the Texas Federation of Women's Clubs and in response to the need to staff newly established public libraries.\n\nThis four-part reader's theatre presentation is developed from eye-witness accounts documented in the letters from students\, faculty\, and employers and the journals Illinois students kept during their senior year field experiences. Topics covered include curricula\, field experiences\, and job placement.
