SCHOLARS IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM

The University of Texas at Austin School of Information will host a limited number of Scholars-in-Residence. Individuals selected for the Scholars-in-Residence program are expected to be involved in the intellectual life of the school. In this capacity they may work with faculty and students on specific research projects, offer guest lectures in classes, and make presentations in regular iForums or at other venues across the campus.

Because the school receives many more applications each year than it can accept, we request that each applicant submit the following information in an application to be reviewed by the school's Executive Committee. Although the School is unable to provide financial support or office space, each Scholar-in-Residence is given university library access, access to the iSchool computer lab, and a computer account. Visits must be a minimum of two weeks and may last up to one calendar year.

Application Process

Please refer to the university visiting scholar/researcher guidelines for complete rules and regulations; iSchool requirements for visiting scholars may be stricter in some circumstances.

The applicant is asked to submit:

  • Letter of intent indicating a desire to visit The University of Texas at Austin, and the expected dates of the visit as well as sources of financial support. (Please note, the U.S. State Department requires a guarantee of support for all individuals who are not citizens of the United States.) Applications should be received a minimum of three months proceeding the semester the applicant wishes to visit.
  • Current curriculum vita (resume).
  • Statement of specific research interests, including proposed plan of work while at UT (The applicant should indicate if any special technology or information resources will be needed, including information about type of computer and software needed to support basic academic work.) Please include the reasons why application is being made to The University of Texas at Austin School of Information.
  • Names, addresses, phone number and e-mail of three individuals who may be contacted for references (regarding the applicant's scholarly ability and facility with written and spoken English, should English not be the applicant's first language).

Applications should be sent directly to:

School of Information
The University of Texas at Austin
1616 Guadalupe, D8600
Austin, TX 78701-1213 Email: scholar ischool.utexas.edu

The applications will be evaluated using the following criteria:

  1. Applicant's past experience and research proposal
  2. Applicant's current research areas overlap with interests of specific iSchool faculty who will be on campus during the proposed visit
  3. Applicant holds a doctoral degree and is actively engaged in research at other institutions.

Specific questions about the process or status of an application should be directed to: Chair of the Research Environment Committee in care of scholar@ischool.utexas.edu.

Please note that letters sent directly to individual faculty members are forwarded to the Dean's office, so we request that you do not send multiple requests to various faculty members, as this will not improve the applicant's chances for acceptance as a Scholar-in-Residence.

Once accepted, the individual will be required to submit proof of funding (the current rate is a minimum of $1,000/month for the scholar and $600/month for each accompanying dependent--this amount may change in the future) and of health insurance coverage.

International Applicants

If visiting from outside of the United States UT’s International Office will assist in completing the paperwork to obtain a J-1 Visa from the United States government, and additional information of interest to international visitors can be found at their web site.
