Faculty Positions Available

The School of Information at The University of Texas at Austin invites applications for four full-time, tenure-track positions, anticipated to start in Fall 2008. We seek faculty members who can bring vision and commitment to our mission to become a leader in the dynamic field of information studies. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Senior candidates are particularly encouraged to apply.

We are seeking candidates with excellent research and teaching abilities and a commitment to shaping the future of the school and the discipline. We are particularly keen on faculty who can enhance our offerings in information organization, design of information systems, digital libraries and archives, and management of information resources, but we welcome applications from excellent candidates who can enhance our offerings in any area of information studies and whose work transcends traditional divisions within the field. Candidates must hold a doctorate degree in a field that is relevant to their area of research and be able to articulate clearly a research agenda that fits within the School's core areas of focus. All candidates should provide evidence of possessing strong theoretical and technical skills, while senior candidates must demonstrate a record of obtaining and directing funded research projects and of mentoring new scholars.

Faculty responsibilities include teaching (a 2+2 load is normal, but may be reduced through external funding), mentoring doctoral students, serving on school and university committees, and conducting a program of research that meets national standards of excellence.

The School of Information is ranked 7th in the nation among accredited programs in Library and Information Studies, #1 in the nation in the area of archives and preservation, and #3 in legal librarianship. With over 20 faculty and lecturers, the School is home to approximately 300 graduate students and is an active member of the emerging information schools caucus. The University of Texas has approved new facilities to house the school as we embark on the strategic growth of our program.

The School has research and teaching interests in three broadly conceived areas: Information Interactions, Curation, and Organization, all of which are seen as important in the education of new information professionals. Home to the Kilgarlin Center for Preservation of the Cultural Record and host of the journal Libraries & the Cultural Record, the School has extensive ties with many other units on campus. As well as offering both MSIS and PhD degrees, we offer joint masters degrees with Middle Eastern Studies, and Women & Gender Studies, Certificates of Advanced Study in Preservation Management and in Conservation Studies, and portfolio programs in areas such as Philanthropic Studies, Museum Studies, and Communication, Information & Cultural Policy. In recent years the School has made extensive efforts to connect with local industry and employers through internships and required professional experiences for students in their final semesters. Recognizing the needs for highly skilled information professionals who can mix technical capabilities with humanistic and social science perspectives, the School of Information aims to be a leader in information studies in the next decade.
