iSchool Students Support Reading Rock Stars

Materials for Children (INF 382E) ischool graduate students volunteered 40 hours to write curriculum guides for books written by the 2009 Texas Book Festival Reading Rock Stars. This year’s RRS authors are Derrick Barnes, Mac Barnett, Psuedonymous Bosch, Francisco Jimenez, Jose Lozano, Katherine Marsh, Rene Saldana, Jr., Jon Scieszka, Carmen Tafolla, Samantha Vamos.

Reading Rock Stars, an outreach program, cultivates interest and skills in reading and writing by bringing children’s authors to economically disadvantaged Texas schools. Teachers in the school prepare students by using the curriculum guides before the author visits. Every child in the program receives an autographed book from the author that may be the first book that the child owns. Reading Rock Stars donates a complete set of the authors’ books to each participating school.
