UTOPIA Grant to Access Images of 1949 TexasA $10,000 UTOPIA grant supported a project to provide online access of hundreds of never seen vintage photographs taken by American Photographer Russell Lee. The photographs were commissioned by University of Texas professor George I. Sanchez in 1949 for his milestone Study of the Spanish-Speaking People of Texas. Shortly before his death in 1986, Russell Lee donated the original negatives to the Center for American History at The University of Texas at Austin.Center for American History Photo Archivist Linda Peterson and School of Information doctoral student Maria E. Gonzalez received the grant to digitize and curate all the images and to create an online exhibit. The permanent location for the website is http://www.cah.utexas.edu/ssspot/. The online exhibit has been chosen as a featured link to The University of Texas UTOPIA website, which may be found temporarily at http://utopia.utexas.edu/. UTOPIA is an initiative of The University of Texas at Austin intended to make public the university's vast collections and to present research results to an audience world-wide regardless of location, resources or technical skills. Background research for the project was conducted by Maria E. Gonzalez under the supervision of Center for American History Director Don E. Carleton and School of Information Professor Emilio Zamora. School of Information alumnus Uri Kolodney coordinated the activities performed by UT's Digital Library Services. Maria Esteva administered the extensive metadata. Amy Bowman assisted in the month-long preparation and digitization of the fragile negatives. Overall project direction was executed by Linda Peterson. For additional information about the project, please contact Maria E. Gonzalez at gonzalez@ischool.utexas.edu
