Usability Expert Joins School of Information

Randolph Bias, a leading expert on usability evaluation methods, has joined the University of Texas at Austin's School of Information as Associate Professor.

An expert in human cognition, Dr. Bias obtained his PhD in experimental psychology from The University of Texas and is a Certified Human Factors Professional. He has over 20 years experience as a researcher, manager and consultant at AT&T Bell Labs, IBM and BMC Software Inc. Most recently he was Chief Usability Officer for Austin Usability.

He served for many years on the program committee for ACM SIGCHI and the Human Factors Society conferences, and published over 50 papers and reports on usability, most notably his 1994 work (with Deborah Mayhew) "Cost-Justifying Usability", frequently characterized as a classic in the field. Dr. Bias will teach introductory and advanced courses in user behavior, usability evaluation and human-computer interaction.

"Randolph is an excellent hire for us," said School Dean Andrew Dillon. "He brings unique experience of industry to the School, offers tremendous links for our students to the world of practice, and adds significantly to our ability to offer a top-class education in user studies, HCI and information architecture".
