Course Description
Materials in all formats suitable for use by and with children. Selection
aids, application of selection and evaluation criteria, and materials
planning. Applicable to services for children in both school and public
libraries.

Course Objectives:
- The student should
become familiar with materials in all formats suitable for use with
children.
- The student should
become familiar with aids for the selection of children's materials.
- The student should
have practice in applying selection and evaluation criteria.
- The student should
plan for the utilization of materials for children.
- The student should
be aware of current issues and trends in library service to children.
In order to
meet these objectives, the student will be required to complete the following:
- Read Through the Eyes of a Child for background and overview. Listen to, read, and
view materials extensively. Discuss materials in class sessions. Individual
experiences should be used to extend, rather than duplicate, your present
background in children's literature.
- Read "Chapter 7 : Tools and Aids for Selection" in Lukenbill's Collection Development for a New Century. (Z 675 S3 L8953 2002 PCL Reserves) Examine
selection aids in the library. Complete assignment on selection tools/reviewing
journals.
- Use selection tools
and evaluative criteria to compile a bibliography of book and non-print
materials about a non-fiction subject.
- Read materials about
programs for children.
- Select a current
issues and trends topic. Read about the topic. Present the issue in
a poster and as a class presentation.
