Eighth Grade English/Language Arts Teacher and Yearbook Sponsor

Strickland Middle School, Denton, Texas           August 2000 – July 2003

  • Taught reading, writing, grammar, literature, and research skills to regular education students, special education students, gifted and talented students, and ESL Levels 1, 2, &3 students in a mainstreamed classroom setting
  • Encouraged students to become life long learners by accompanying them on regular visits to the library, where I assisted them in the selection of reading materials and in research for class projects
  • Stimulated student interest in learning through use of visual displays in the classroom
  • Developed lesson plans that incorporated a variety of computer and print resources to prepare students for the TAAS Writing and Reading tests and for the TAKS Reading tests, resulting in student success rates that were on average three percentage points above the district’s test standards every year
  • Developed publishing skills (photography, writing, design, and editing) by providing instruction and direction in development and production of the SMS yearbook from the initial planning stages until the publication stage
  • Collaborated with the librarian, the English department, and a team of 8th grade teachers to provide faculty members and students with appropriate resources and programs that would meet the needs of a diverse body of students and teachers
